KMS38 allowed tricking the operating system’s built-in GatherOSstate file and extending the OS activation period until January 19, 2038. With the latest Patch Tuesday update (November 2025, KB5068861, KB5067112) the method stopped working. Ferra Massgrave notes that other unofficial activation methods, HWID and TSforge, are still working. KMS was originally created by Microsoft for large-scale corporate Windows deployment: the technology allowed activating multiple devices without manual key entry.
