In its early years, this invention was strictly positioned as a tool for business communication: placing orders, conducting negotiations with partners, and similar tasks. In 1897, an unnamed author from Great Britain predicted: “Soon people will turn into mere nebulous, visible clots of substance to each other.” The connection was unstable due to constant interference from ordinary electrical wiring, and the battery that powered the apparatus regularly leaked acid.
