The Chief Information Officer for the American food giant Soup King Campbell’s, known for its canned goods and soups, was dismissed following derogatory comments he made about the company’s offerings. His own subordinate essentially reported him.
Robert Garza, an IT security specialist, secretly recorded a meeting with Vice President Martin Bally in November 2024. During this session, Bally offered several harsh critiques of the firm’s food, claiming it was intended “only for poor people.” Furthermore, Bally stated he would not consume any “Soup King” items due to the use of “bioengineered meat,” asserting that the chicken used in Campbell’s cans was actually “3D-printed.”
Garza initially disclosed this information to his direct supervisor and subsequently to the Human Resources department, yet no immediate action was taken against Bally. However, weeks later, Garza himself was terminated. Subsequently, Garza made the recording public, which drew the attention of the Florida prosecutor because laboratory-grown meat is prohibited in that state. Consequently, the company opted to terminate Bally.
Following the fallout, Campbell’s confirmed the recording’s authenticity, acknowledged that Bally’s statements were highly inappropriate and factually incorrect, and conceded that Garza’s firing had been wrongful.
In an effort to restore its damaged reputation, the company issued numerous assurances that their products are made with genuine chicken sourced from quality-controlled farms.
