The figure of Argentina national team forward Lionel Messi in the city of Mar del Plata has been vandalized and destroyed. According to the publication Ahora Mar del Plata, the football player’s statue was attacked by perpetrators and split into two pieces.
The statue was situated at the entrance of the cafe El Nuevo Mundial. It depicted the footballer wearing the national team’s colors while holding the World Cup trophy. This sculpture was dedicated to the Argentine squad’s victory in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar.
Currently, the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. An assessment will need to be made to determine if the statue, which has now been subjected to vandalism for the second time, can be restored. Back in 2024, the sculpture of Messi had its head removed.
