UK specialists from the Pesticide Action Network organization named the 12 most pesticide-contaminated fruits and vegetables after examining over three tons of produce from store shelves.
The experts detected 123 distinct chemical substances in 17 kinds of products, including 42 pesticides linked to an elevated risk of cancerous diseases. The highest quantity of residues was found in grapefruits, grapes, limes, bananas, peppers, melons, beans, chilies, potatoes, certain root vegetables, ginger, and garlic, the Daily Mail outlet reported.
A particular concern for the researchers was the cocktail effect. This is the intensification of toxicity when different chemicals interact. For instance, one sample of Turkish grapes contained a total of 16 pesticides. Beets turned out to be the sole vegetable with a minimal contamination level.
