A US Army veteran told Australian blogger Samuel Weidenhofer how he lost his pension. Now, the 88-year-old man is forced to work five days a week at a local store to cover his bills. Weidenhofer opened a donation account for the veteran, through which the retiree collected over $1.18 million, reported the New York Post.
“I retired from General Motors in 1999. In 2012, they declared bankruptcy and took away my pension,” the veteran complained.
In retirement, according to the elderly gentleman, he felt comfortable. He had financial security, but then was left with nothing. At the same time, his wife, with whom the pensioner lived for 50 years, became ill and passed away. To pay for treatment, the veteran sold his home and almost everything he owned.
“His story is a stark reminder that far too many of our seniors, especially veterans, face incredible hardship just to survive,” the blogger wrote.
The man’s story attracted the attention of a huge number of people, including celebrities and bankers. They made contributions to assist the pensioner.
