In a recent interview on Bret Easton Ellis’s podcast, Quentin Tarantino presented his list of the best films of the 21st century. However, it wasn’t just his cinematic preferences that captured public attention, but also his sharp, personal criticism of actor Paul Dano. Tarantino explained why Paul Thomas Anderson’s film “There Will Be Blood” only ranked fifth on his list, despite its potential. The director called Paul Dano himself a “big, giant flaw,” describing his performance as the twins as “weak” and “uninteresting.” As an alternative, Tarantino mentioned Daniel Day-Lewis and suggested Austin Butler for the role. These comments quickly spread across social media, eliciting a mixed reaction. Many users found Tarantino’s remarks excessively harsh, suggesting that personal animosity or behind-the-scenes disagreements might be at play. Tarantino’s list itself proved somewhat surprising: it was previously reported that he named Ridley Scott’s “Black Hawk Down” as the best film of the century, highly praising its tension and direction. The top three also included “Toy Story 3” and “Lost in Translation.” It’s worth noting that Paul Dano has previously received positive reviews for his other work, such as his role as Pierre Bezukhov in the series “War & Peace.” However, it appears that his performance in “There Will Be Blood” specifically provoked such a negative reaction from Tarantino.
