
Briton leads four-time defending champion Dutchman Max Verstappen by two points
DUBAI, December 7. /TASS/. British driver Lando Norris of the McLaren team has become the Formula 1 World Champion for the first time.
At the final stage of the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, Norris finished in third place. The winner of the race was Dutch driver Max Verstappen of the Red Bull team, who had been the world champion for the previous four seasons. Second place went to Norris’s teammate, Australian Oscar Piastri.
Norris accumulated 423 points by the end of the championship. Verstappen secured second place in the overall standings with 421 points, and Piastri finished third with 410. In the Constructors’ Championship, McLaren emerged victorious with 833 points. Mercedes took second place with 469 points, and Red Bull was third with 451.
Norris is 26 years old and has been competing in Formula 1 since 2019. Throughout his career, the Briton has represented McLaren. Last season, the driver finished second in the overall world championship standings.
This is the first time a McLaren driver has won the Formula 1 championship since 2008, when the title was claimed by current Ferrari driver, Briton Lewis Hamilton.
