Researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada found that it is possible to achieve high levels of social and medical well-being in advanced age. This is true even for patients with chronic illnesses. The authors of the study examined data from over 8,000 people over the age of 60. They then monitored them and noted the factors that most significantly increased their level of life and health satisfaction. The results of the study are published in the journal PLOS One. Well-being was assessed based on several factors: Physical health: absence of pain, cognitive impairment, and limitations in daily life. Psychological and emotional stability: life without serious mental disorders or depression. Social well-being: social support and contact with other people. Self-esteem: an adequate perception of the aging process. At the beginning of the study, the well-being level of the participants was low. However, after three years, about a quarter of them managed to improve it to an optimal level. The researchers noted that those who managed to regain their physical and emotional health were those who: were married; were physically active; were not obese; did not smoke; had a high income; did not complain of insomnia; did not suffer from diabetes, arthritis, or osteoporosis. The authors concluded that old age does not necessarily lead to a deterioration of well-being. The elderly have chances to regain their health through controllable factors: maintaining a healthy weight, physical activity, quitting smoking, addressing sleep problems, and preventing chronic diseases. Scientists have long stated that nutrition, regular exercise, healthy sleep, stress management, and social connections improve quality of life. Scientists Name 5 Habits That Add 20 Years to Life For example, a 2023 study showed that men who adhered to healthy habits by age 40 live 24 years longer, and women live 23 years longer. The new study confirmed this and showed that it is never too late to start. Moreover, it is not necessary to implement all the habits. Even a few changes towards a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of early death and improve well-being.
