Mercedes-Benz and Momenta have announced a collaboration to launch Level 4 robotaxis based on the new S-Class. Initial trials will take place in Abu Dhabi, where the service operator will be Lumo—a division of the tech firm K2. According to Mercedes-Benz, the S-Class software platform is a crucial component enabling driverless transportation.
K2 has already secured federal authorization to operate autonomous vehicles in the UAE. Soon, test S-Class vehicles will commence operation on Abu Dhabi roads. Following a successful pilot phase, the project might be expanded to other markets.
This initiative supplements other Mercedes-Benz projects focused on autonomous driving development, including solutions for private customers and commercial applications. The manufacturer is also considering potential cooperation regarding robotaxis utilizing the Nvidia Drive AV platform.
The company continues to test the S-Class with its Level 4 autonomous system in Beijing, where it became the first foreign automaker to receive approval for autonomous testing on urban routes. Such advancements are shaping the future of mobility and broadening the selection of technological options in the driverless transport segment.
