Mohamed Salah is not solely in the contention for being Liverpool’s greatest player of all time, but he’s additionally been among the finest in the world over the past decade.
He has been a driving force of Liverpool’s recent achievement, securing two Premier League trophies, one Champions League, and one Club World Cup throughout his remarkable nine-year tenure.
Salah, Liverpool’s leading goalscorer ever in the Premier League, has also forged an emotional connection with supporters and the local area, with portraits of his likeness scattered throughout the stadium and metropolis.
It should therefore be nearly impossible for such an icon, in the later part of his career, to clash so severely with a club to which he’s dedicated his prime years.
But, following an extraordinary statement given to journalists after Liverpool’s 3-3 tie versus Leeds on Saturday, that is precisely what has occurred.
What did Salah utter?
There had been whispers of a disagreement for quite some duration.
Last season, prior to Liverpool securing the Premier League title, it was uncertain whether Salah would be granted a fresh contract at the club, provoking months of conjecture which strained the previously unbreakable association.
The resolution to award Salah a fresh contract at the conclusion of last season, however, seemed to resolve rumors of a separation. But, seven months after signing the paperwork, the relationship now appears somewhat irreparable.
To grasp the rift, one must first view it within the framework of Liverpool’s disappointing season thus far. Many had anticipated the reigning league winners to contend again for another championship, but the club currently resides in 10th place having lost six of its 15 league matches this term.
Salah’s performance has also declined to the extent where he is no longer being named in the starting lineup. Where previously Liverpool relied on Salah to redeem it from a slump in performance, he is now being disregarded.
That, it appears, has been difficult for Salah to accept.
“Presently I’m seated on the bench and I don’t comprehend why. It appears the organization has scapegoated me. That is how I’m feeling. I think it is quite apparent that someone wished me to shoulder all the fault.”
Not satisfied with that shock announcement, Salah also targeted Liverpool’s leadership at a moment when manager Arne Slot is beginning to encounter doubt concerning his standing at the club.
“I received numerous assurances in the summer, and so far I’ve been on the bench for three matches, so I cannot claim they upheld their assurance,” he commented.
“I’ve stated on numerous occasions before that I possessed a fine rapport with the manager, and suddenly we have no rapport whatsoever. I don’t know the reason but it appears to me, as I perceive it, that somebody does not desire me at the club.”
How has Liverpool reacted?
Rather predictably, Liverpool opted to leave Salah out of its squad that journeyed to Milan to confront Inter in the Champions League on Tuesday.
When Slot was questioned about the situation during a press briefing before the match in Italy, the Liverpool manager stated he was a bit “astonished” to hear Salah’s remarks.
“It’s not the primary or the final instance that when a player is not participating … that he says something comparable to what he did,” Slot acknowledged.
“But I believe our, my response to that is also evident, and that he is not present with us this evening.”
Slot also mentioned he had “no comprehension” whether Salah had played his final match at Liverpool and that the club’s action was an exhibition of resolve.
“Typically I am composed and courteous, but that does not imply I am feeble,” Slot added.
Salah’s choice to voice his perspective has ignited a fierce discussion across the soccer arena. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher informed Sky Sports that Salah’s comments were a “shame,” adding that he felt it was a deliberate maneuver to “create maximum harm and to reinforce his own standing.”
Meanwhile, former England international Wayne Rooney asserted on BBC Sport that Salah was “entirely ruining his legacy at Liverpool.”
Liverpool competes against Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday and Salah has hinted that it might be his last appearance in a Liverpool jersey.
The 33-year-old will shortly join the Egyptian team for the Africa Cup of Nations, which will cause him to miss a couple of matches for his club. But, with the January transfer window commencing soon, there are reports the winger could secure a new team before returning from international service.
The manner he waved at Liverpool’s traveling supporters at the conclusion of the Leeds match over the weekend would also suggest that possibility, with the “Egyptian King” – as Liverpool fans affectionately refer to him – apparently one foot out the exit already.
And, despite his declining impact in the Premier League, there would likely be a host of teams prepared to acquire Salah.
Saudi Arabia is perhaps the evident destination, considering prior interest last season, but Serie A clubs have also explored the English market recently and the attacker has previously participated in Italy.
If Salah is to depart, though, it would conclude an affectionate history that has characterized a glorious era for Liverpool football club. But, given his age and the ruthless nature of top-tier soccer, it’s perhaps not entirely unexpected.
