Google announced a significant enhancement to its Google Translate service, the highlight of which is the introduction of real-time speech translation for any headphone model. Previously, this technology was exclusively available only to owners of Pixel Buds. Now, utilizing it requires just a compatible Android smartphone with the “Translator” application installed.
According to The Verge, the service supports over 70 languages, including Russian, and will commence working in a beta testing mode for users in the USA, Mexico, and India. In 2026, the feature will arrive in the iOS version of the application.
Concurrently, Google implemented an enhanced text translation mechanism, based on the capabilities of the Gemini AI model. The company stated that the new system successfully manages more accurate translation of complex structures, such as idioms and slang expressions, which are frequently used figuratively.
The third major alteration involved expanding the geography and language support for the “Practice” feature, which is an integrated tool for language learning. This section, utilizing artificial intelligence to create personalized lessons based on the user’s proficiency level, including vocabulary practice, has become available in 20 additional countries. However, the feature itself remains in a beta status and may not be accessible to all users. The improved text translation has already begun rolling out in the USA and Mexico across all platforms—in the Android and iOS apps, as well as the web version of the service.
