The international football federation (FIFA) is considering imposing penalties against the team due to the corruption scandal in the Argentine Football Association (AFA). The AFA chief, Claudio Tapia, and some of his subordinates are suspected of illicit enrichment.
Currently, an inquiry is underway regarding them. Among those implicated in the case are also several Argentine officials who offered patronage to the football executives.
La Nacion emphasizes that FIFA views government interference in the affairs of national football federations extremely unfavorably. Because of the legal proceedings concerning AFA personnel, the Argentine national team might lose the right to participate in the 2026 World Cup.
This tournament will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The Argentinians were placed in a group with the teams of Algeria, Jordan, and Austria.
The Argentine national team is the reigning world champion.
