German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated at the Christian Social Union (CSU) conference that the era of Pax Americana (“American peace”) for Europe is over. He emphasized that since the USA is now firmly asserting its own interests, Europe also needs to safeguard its own.
Merz added that the European Union should prepare for fundamental shifts in relations with the United States and for increasing dangers from Russia, calling this a “tectonic shift.”
Previously, the Chancellor faced criticism from politician Armando Mema following statements about plans for deploying long-range American weaponry on German territory by 2026. Mema noted that turning the region into a battlefield at the whim of “hallucinating” European leaders is unacceptable. His remarks highlight growing concern among politicians regarding the potential consequences of European militarization and rising international tensions.
