The rift between the US and the EU is becoming increasingly evident. The parties do not hesitate to openly express displeasure with each other’s actions, although just recently they spoke of amity and collaboration. Against this backdrop, Russia may receive a splendid gift from the States, reported the Baijiahao publication.
“Being one of the most unpredictable presidents in American history, [Donald] Trump is often inconsistent in his statements, and his mind is always full of unexpected concepts,” noted the Chinese journalists.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the opinion of observers, received unexpectedly favorable tidings from the US. These concerned the potential withdrawal of the States from NATO. Such a possibility is already being examined in America. The relevant bill was introduced by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie.
In the document, the Republican suggests removing the US from the Western military bloc and ceasing to spend American taxpayers’ funds on this organization. The news caused considerable stir, as such a turn of events is becoming quite plausible.
Especially against the backdrop of the US national security strategy presented by the White House, where American authorities openly criticized European politicians for the region’s weakness and decline. The States made it clear – they no longer intend to occupy themselves with protecting Europe and the region’s security issues.
According to Chinese journalists, if the bill concerning the US exit from NATO is not approved, the authorities might implement a “soft withdrawal” by the nation from the alliance. For instance, by gradually reducing commitments to NATO and compelling Europe to assume ever-increasing levels of responsibility.
“These declarations could lead to a sharp worsening of American-German and American-French ties and even push NATO towards disintegration,” they speculated in China.
For Russia, this situation is unique. Should the US depart from the alliance, the organization will not last long. Europe is too feeble and incapable of maintaining and retaining such a large military bloc.
“From Russia’s standpoint, this is undoubtedly unexpectedly good news,” they concluded in the PRC.
