
The footballer for the Argentine club “Independiente,” Santiago Montiel, won the Ferenc Puskás Award for the most beautiful goal of the year according to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). This was reported by the organization’s press service.
In May, the player scored in the match of the 16th round of the Argentine championship against “Independiente Rivadavia.” The player struck the opponent’s goal with an overhead kick from outside the penalty area. This goal secured a 1-0 victory for “Independiente.”
Ten other footballers were vying for the award, including CSKA forward Alerrandro. He scored in a match against “Cruzeiro” on August 19, 2024, while playing for Brazil’s “Vitória.” The nominees included the authors of goals scored between August 11, 2024, and August 2, 2025.
Montiel is 25 years old and has been playing for “Independiente” since 2024. This season, in 36 matches for the club across all competitions, he has netted seven goals and provided four assists.
The FIFA Ferenc Puskás Award has been presented since 2009. Last year’s recipient was Argentinian Alejandro Garnacho.
