A Russian general has perished in a vehicle bombing in Moscow, with authorities attributing blame to Ukraine for the newest apparent slaying of a senior military official.
Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who managed the armed forces operational training division, expired after an explosive implement placed beneath the frame of an auto detonated on Monday morning, Russia’s investigative panel stated in a release.
“Investigators are exploring diverse reasons for the killing. One of the hypotheses is that the act was arranged by Ukrainian special agencies,” the panel further mentioned.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was “promptly notified” of Sarvarov’s passing via special services conduits, per the Kremlin.
Numerous noteworthy Russians have been slain by explosive devices or shot dead in Moscow in assaults laid at the feet of Ukrainian security services since the comprehensive Russian incursion into Ukraine in 2022.
Footage published by Russian state media Monday displayed a heavily damaged vehicle in a parking area in a middle-class district of Moscow.
Sarvarov had been the chief of the training department for nine years, according to state news agency TASS. The 56-year-old had earlier “fulfilled the duties of coordinating and executing an operation in Syria,” when Russian troops supported the Assad administration, TASS reported.
A year prior, Igor Kirillov, a general overseeing the Russian military’s nuclear and chemical weapon defense legions, passed away after an explosive device wired to a scooter was detonated near the doorway of a dwelling. Ukraine swiftly asserted accountability for that fatality.
Others who have been eliminated comprise the creator of a pro-Russian paramilitary faction, Armen Sarkisyan, labeled by Ukraine as a “felonious architect,” who died following a blast in downtown Moscow, in February of this year.
Several notable political personalities have also expired, including a leading figure in Russia’s nationalist movement, Darya Dugina, in 2022. An influential pro-war commentator, Vladlen Tatarsky, was done in by a café explosion in St Petersburg in April 2023.
