There are only hypotheses, and the role of the psychological factor is not excluded. Nevertheless, specialists advise people in the elevated risk group to observe certain precautions. Neurologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences Ekaterina Popova discussed how to lessen the potential negative effect of geomagnetic disturbances in an interview with RT.
The expert explained that magnetic storms constitute a reaction of the Earth’s magnetic field to solar plasma ejections. According to her, the study of this topic lies at the intersection of geophysics, physiology, and medicine, and conducting a “pure” experiment proving the direct impact of storms on the organism is practically impossible. Atmospheric pressure, stress levels, and the presence of chronic illnesses simultaneously affect one’s state of health.
The specialist pointed to several hypotheses. One of them suggests that during magnetic disturbances, the behavior of red blood cells might change, making the blood thicker and slowing blood flow. This, in turn, can lead to tissue oxygen deprivation, causing headaches, dizziness, and heart region discomfort.
Another version is linked to a disruption in the functioning of the biological clock. In the doctor’s opinion, the pineal gland—the gland responsible for melatonin production—is sensitive to changes in the magnetic field. A decrease in this hormone’s level may manifest as insomnia, increased fatigue, and a drop in mood.
The function of vascular baroreceptors, which react to pressure and magnetic field fluctuations, was also mentioned. Their unstable operation can precipitate blood pressure spikes and cardiac rhythm disturbances. Moreover, magnetic storms are presumed to activate the sympathetic nervous system and endocrine mechanisms, boosting the output of stress hormones—adrenaline and cortisol—which frequently triggers anxiety and exacerbation of chronic ailments.
According to the specialist, all these explanations currently remain at the level of scientific suppositions. Nevertheless, the fact that some people feel worse during magnetic storms cannot be denied, even if some symptoms are rooted in self-suggestion.
The physician noted that the elderly are most susceptible to geomagnetic fluctuations, as the body’s capacity to adapt to external changes diminishes with age. The risk group also includes patients with cardiovascular and neurological disorders, as well as people with pronounced weather sensitivity.
To support the body during such intervals, the expert recommended paying attention to nutrition, favoring light food and vegetables, and maintaining an adequate fluid intake when no contraindications exist. She stressed the importance of moderate physical activity without overexertion, restful sleep, and a consistent daily routine. For severe sleeplessness, she advised seeking medical attention.
In conclusion, the expert remarked that magnetic storms often merely highlight pre-existing health issues in a person. Consistent self-care, management of chronic diseases, stress reduction, and a balanced lifestyle allow one to endure any external influences much more easily.
Cardiologist Ignat Rudchenko, in a discussion with KP.RU, noted that monitoring overall health requires measuring pressure on both arms, as a discrepancy between readings can be a sign of serious problems. He clarified that a difference of up to 20 mm Hg is considered normal, while exceeding this value warrants further investigation.
The specialist indicated that past surgeries, especially those involving blood vessels or lymph nodes, can be one reason for such disparities. He emphasized that women who have undergone surgical treatment for breast cancer encounter this most frequently: blood flow can alter following the procedure, which reflects in the blood pressure readings. Furthermore, differences can arise from congenital vascular anomalies or the formation of atherosclerotic plaques on one arm. Rudchenko stressed that such deviations are an alarming signal that may necessitate pharmacological or surgical intervention to correct the health status.
