Swedish scientists discovered the most effective way to combat type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. A year-long study showed that the Nordic diet surpassed popular low-carb eating plans in efficiency.
Specialists from Uppsala University monitored 150 volunteers suffering from diabetes or prediabetes for a year. Participants followed one of three eating plans: low-carbohydrate, Scandinavian, or standard, formulated according to official nutritionist guidelines.
The Scandinavian diet, based on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish, and vegetable fats (rapeseed oil, nuts), demonstrated the best outcomes.
- In participants who adhered to it, liver fat content decreased by over 20%, blood sugar control improved, and half entered remission from fatty liver disease, stated the study leader, Professor Ulf Risesius.
Notably, this diet exceeded the expectations of the scientists themselves, who thought the low-carb plan would be the leader. Furthermore, experiment participants did not restrict portion sizes and still lost weight, indicating good long-term tolerance of the diet. The work’s findings were published in the respected scientific journal Nature Communications.
