The well-liked tactical online shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege from French publisher and developer Ubisoft fell victim to a hacker intrusion. Amidst the situation, the game’s servers needed to be taken offline.
As reported by the Dexerto portal, on December 27th, users of Rainbow Six Siege on PC and consoles started receiving billions of units of in-game currency (R6S credits) and renown points, “Alpha” packs, and exclusive cosmetic items.
This act of extraordinary generosity turned out to be the work of hackers who breached the game’s servers. Alongside the gifts to players, Rainbow Six Siege users also began receiving bans. Likely, these were from the attackers themselves, as the blocks appeared random.
Soon after the spontaneous gift giveaway started, Ubisoft reported that they were aware of the “incident currently affecting” the game and were actively working to fix the issues.
Less than two hours after that notice, Ubisoft deliberately shut down the Rainbow Six Siege servers and restricted access to the in-game store while the trouble was sorted out.
Ubisoft did not clarify the cause of the incident. The company also did not specify if the bans issued by the hackers would be reversed or if users face disciplinary action for logging in during the breach.
Rainbow Six Siege debuted in December 2015 and is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, including via the Ubisoft+ Premium subscription. In October 2022, the game’s audience surpassed 85 million people.
