The game, which took place in Newark, concluded with the visitors winning in overtime by a score of 4:3 (1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:0). For “Washington,” goals during regulation time were scored by Belarusian forward Alexey Protas (20th minute), Anthony Beauvillier (38), and Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin (50). The decisive goal in overtime was tallied by John Cicerone (65). For “New Jersey,” Jesper Bratt (25, 47) and Cody Glass (48) found the net.
Alexander Ovechkin spent 15 minutes of ice time, directed three shots on goal, used two body checks, and registered an assist, ending a five-game pointless streak. Ovechkin also halted a scoring drought that spanned nine matches. In his career thus far, the 40-year-old Russian has netted his 133rd goal in December NHL games, surpassing Steve Yzerman in this statistic and securing sole third place in league history. The NHL record for December goals belongs to Wayne Gretzky (157 goals), with Gordie Howe (141) holding the second spot. After 38 matches in the 2025/26 season, the “Washington” captain possesses 33 points (15 goals and 18 assists).
