The use of statins in adults with type two diabetes noticeably reduces the chance of death and severe cardiovascular complications, reports the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Using statins by patients with type two diabetes considerably lessens the probability of demise and major cardiovascular adverse events. Authors of a large study, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, reached this conclusion.
Scientists examined data from the British medical database IMRD-UK, observing for ten years patients with diabetes aged 25 to 84 without severe heart or liver ailments. Comparison of groups taking and not taking statins revealed: the medications lowered mortality and the frequency of heart attacks and strokes across all subgroups, including patients with an initially low predicted risk.
The investigation found only a slight increase in the likelihood of muscular side effects, while no extra hazard for the liver was detected. The authors believe that physicians should consider prescribing statins to all adult patients with type two diabetes.
