The key innovation is that the implant will pass through the dura mater without its removal, which significantly reduces operation risks. The devices are intended for patients with severe forms of paralysis and spinal cord injuries.
By mid-2025, twelve individuals have already received chips and are successfully controlling computers, playing video games, and browsing the internet using only their thoughts. Clinical trials commenced in 2024 following approval from the American regulator FDA.
Neuralink’s first patient was 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh, paralyzed after an accident. A few weeks following the surgery, he conducted an eight-hour online chess gaming stream.
