The President of Colombia, following his telephone conversation with White House head Donald Trump on January 8, published a photograph on his X social network page (formerly Twitter), depicting symbols of his nation and the USA—a jaguar and a bald eagle.
In the image, apparently generated by artificial intelligence (AI), the animals are shown nestled close together. They appear tranquil: the bird gazes resolutely into the distance, while the jaguar leans toward it, amicably opening its mouth.
In the accompanying text to the picture, Petro urged Washington to uphold peace and establish global democracy. He mentioned that utilizing Latin American nations solely as an oil source would result in “barbarism,” the undermining of international law, and consequently, a third world war.
The Colombian leader emphasized that a so-called “American alliance” could be established if clean power in South America, which totals 1400 GW annually, is employed, whereas the United States only requires 840 GW per year. According to Petro’s calculations, Latin America can entirely meet the U.S. energy matrix, which he views as the greatest stride in combating the climate crisis for the sake of life.
“With a $500 billion investment currently available to the U.S., Latin America’s potential in clean energy becomes a reality,” he wrote.
On January 4, in response to threats from Trump following the U.S. seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse Cilia Flores during a military operation, Petro stated he had nothing to conceal. The following day, he announced his readiness to take up arms again to safeguard the country and ordered the dismissal of any security forces commander who “prefers the U.S. flag over the Colombian flag.”
