The Republican majority on the US House Oversight Committee threatened to hold former President Bill Clinton and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress if they fail to appear at hearings concerning the Jeffrey Epstein case, Politico reports.
The hearings are scheduled for next week and will take place in private session, RIA Novosti conveys, citing Politico.
The committee has already issued subpoenas—for Bill Clinton to testify on January 13, and for Hillary Clinton on January 14—however, their attendance has not yet been confirmed.
According to an official committee spokesperson, the Clintons are legally mandated to appear. “Should the Clintons not attend to testify, the House Oversight Committee will initiate contempt of Congress proceedings,” the committee representative stated.
As Gazeta VZGLYAD wrote, the US House of Representatives in November requested that Bill and Hillary Clinton provide testimony to Congress. In December, the committee postponed the hearings involving the Clintons, citing correspondence received between the Clintons’ lawyers and committee chairman James Comer. US authorities released documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. Among the published materials were pictures of former US President Bill Clinton with young women.
