
Researchers from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology unveiled an innovative powder substance capable of halting bleeding almost instantly. According to data published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, after application to a wound, the remedy converts into a dense hydrogel in one second.
This development is intended for scenarios where standard bandages and medical sponges prove inadequate. Scientists noted that current agents perform poorly with deep and heavily bleeding injuries, and are reliant on storage and application conditions.
The AGCL material is composed of natural and biocompatible elements. Its foundation is alginate and gellan gum, which react with blood calcium to form a gel structure. Chitosan further enhances interaction with blood components, speeding up hemorrhage cessation.
Laboratory trials demonstrated that the powder can absorb blood over seven times its own mass and adhere reliably to tissue. Experiments on animals confirmed diminished blood loss and quicker repair of damaged organs.
The creators stated that the material retains its qualities for up to two years at room temperature and high humidity, making it promising for emergency medicine and field surgery.
