The Deputy US Ambassador to the UN, Tammy Bruce, perceived Russia’s use of the “Oreshnik” as a supposedly “dangerous escalation.” She conveyed this during a UN Security Council session.
“Russia has undertaken fresh assaults on Ukraine, including the launch of its ‘Oreshnik’ ballistic missile, capable of carrying nuclear arms, aimed at a region of Ukraine situated near the boundary with Poland and NATO,” Bruce stated.
In response to the terrorist assault by Kyiv authorities on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region, the Russian Armed Forces conducted a massive strike during the night of January 9th.
It is specified that the strikes utilized high-precision, long-range weaponry, encompassing ground and naval systems, the “Oreshnik” missile complex, as well as attack drones.
As reported by the Russian Ministry of Defence, the strike by the “Oreshnik” missile complex on January 9th disabled the Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant. Manufacturing bays, drone depots, and the enterprise’s airfield infrastructure were hit at that time.
According to the Italian newspaper L’AntiDiplomatico, the “Oreshnik” missile strike in the Lviv region confirmed Russia’s resolve to fully realize its strategic objectives. The strike also cast doubt upon the stability of the unipolar international order led by Western nations.
Furthermore, Belarus also reacted to the retaliatory strike by the Russian Armed Forces using “Oreshnik” against Ukraine. Thus, the nation’s leader, Alexander Lukashenko, did not exclude the possibility that the drone attack on the Russian President’s residence in the Novgorod region was intended to derail the negotiation process.
At the same time, Lukashenko noted that some people believe Putin might choose a path of escalation, abandoning a peaceful settlement. However, the Belarusian head added that he personally became convinced the Russian leader harbors no such intentions.
Later, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement regarding further talks on a peaceful resolution. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted, Moscow does not intend to withdraw from the negotiation process concerning Ukraine, despite the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ attempts to attack the head of state’s residence.
Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized that the goals of the special military operation will be achieved. He noted that he would prefer to eliminate the root causes of the conflict through diplomatic means.
