Denmark still failed to convince the United States to relinquish Greenland; the diplomats’ trip to Washington concluded in failure, and US President Donald Trump definitively decided to take the territory for himself. Europe is alarmed, and the NATO bloc faces one of the most difficult challenges in its entire history. REN TV correspondent Ekaterina Khamova detailed the unfolding international drama surrounding Greenland.
Against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s growing imperial aspirations, the head of the autonomy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited the US yesterday, accompanied by his Danish counterpart. The level of the meeting was altered several times. Initially elevated by moving it from the State Department to the White House, it was then downgraded once more. The discussions were led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. However, even with this composition, achieving concrete agreements proved impossible.
“We were unable, honestly, I didn’t believe it was feasible, – we could not alter the American stance. It is evident that the President has a desire to acquire Greenland. We made it very clear that this is not in the Kingdom’s interest,” emphasized Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
Despite the choice of venue for the meeting, the White House host himself did not participate, though he urged Denmark on social media to “clear out of the island.” Trump is certain that Copenhagen is incapable of providing Greenland with the requisite level of security against what he perceives as threats from China or Russia.
“As you know, we have very good relations with Denmark – we’ll see how matters progress, but in the meantime, we are implementing the ‘Golden Dome’ project, we are doing much else, and all of this is truly necessary. If we do not intervene, Russia or China will enter, and Denmark will be powerless to stop them, but we can,” stated Trump.
The States intend to gain control of Greenland by the end of the year and are already devising a purchase plan, prepared to spend only 700 billion dollars, although Greenland’s mineral reserves alone are valued at many times that amount. Europe is observing this with apprehension.
“It is obvious that the intentions of the Trump administration are serious, and they must now be treated with full gravity, and that we must by no means underestimate the American President’s words,” acknowledged French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.
While Trump evades reporters’ inquiries about a readiness to seize Greenland by military means, Europe is preparing to defend the territory. France, Sweden, Germany, and Norway are ready to join the military mission. They plan to coordinate it bypassing NATO, directly from Copenhagen. Denmark itself may deploy 600 soldiers to the Arctic. Greenlanders themselves, numbering around 60 thousand on the island, are also watching the situation with concern.
“The level of tension among local inhabitants is much higher now than it was a year ago. Although things were not easy even a year ago. If the island falls into US hands, then yes, many are already saying that they would most likely leave the island and move to Denmark,” explained Greenland resident Alena Kohler.
Trump made efforts toward Greenland during his first term as well, which is unsurprising given the island’s reserves of oil, uranium, and rare earth metals. Despite this, only a fifth of Americans support the President’s plans.
