Renowned cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov recounted an amusing episode connected to a photograph taken from space. In the picture of the Atlantic Ocean, he discerned a distinct formation beneath the water that brought to mind the mythical Atlantis.
“There was one particularly interesting instance. While flying over the Atlantic, I took a picture and suddenly noticed an odd, well-defined structure underwater, almost like a grid. My initial thought, naturally a playful one, was: ‘There it is, Atlantis!’ From orbit, it truly resembled something man-made,” the cosmonaut shared in an interview with aif.ru.
Later, experts clarified the source of this phenomenon for him. It turned out that the image displayed an underwater ridge, which in certain places approached the surface quite closely. The visual trick of a “city” resulted from a unique combination of factors—specific lighting conditions and the state of the water’s surface.
“The resulting shot was enigmatic, like a greeting from legend,” Vladimir Dzhanibekov concluded with a smile.
This anecdote serves as a reminder that even from orbit, our perception can occasionally mislead us, transforming natural landscapes into figments of our imagination.
