Presently, Apple utilizes the Globalstar satellite network to power its Emergency SOS feature, enabling users to reach emergency services when outside of conventional cellular coverage areas. Nevertheless, media sources suggest that the partnership with Globalstar is weakening as Starlink continues its rapid development. It is also noted that Apple is avoiding the acquisition of a satellite operator to sidestep the stricter regulatory oversight typically imposed on telecom entities.
The publication The Information reports that the ongoing discussions encompass support for direct-to-cell technology, which grants standard smartphones the ability to link up straight with satellites. Concurrently, Bloomberg suggests that upcoming iPhone generations might incorporate support for the 5G Non-Terrestrial Network standard.
