Mozilla has announced that Firefox will gain the capability to completely deactivate generative Artificial Intelligence features.
In Firefox 148, scheduled for release on February 24, 2026, a new “AI controls” section will be integrated into the settings. Within this area, users will find the “Block AI enhancements” option. Activating this setting will allow individuals to either prevent all current and forthcoming AI functionalities or selectively choose which ones they wish to retain.
These controlled features include page translation, automatic generation of alt-text descriptions for PDF images, tab grouping, link previews, and the integrated chatbot accessible in the sidebar. This update directly addresses the needs of users who prefer not to utilize AI tools within their web browser. Furthermore, Firefox will offer granular control, permitting personalized management of each individual AI component.
The company emphasizes that these additions will remain strictly optional, empowering the user to decide whether or not to engage with them. This enhancement will debut first in the Nightly build before making its way to the stable release channel.
