Intel’s endeavors to re-enter the discrete graphics market began last decade. In 2017, Raja Koduri, who had transitioned from rival AMD, took the helm of these efforts, though he departed from Intel almost three years ago. The current CEO has announced the recent appointment of a new chief architect for GPUs.
These remarks were made by Lip-Bu Tan at the Cisco AI Summit, as reported by CNBC. While withholding the name of the new leader for this division, Intel’s head indicated that persuading the candidate required significant effort and time. Regardless, Intel will need several years to implement shifts in its graphics processor development, meaning the impact of this new appointment won’t be immediate. Most likely, the new executive’s focus will be on creating a competitive line of Intel accelerators specifically for the artificial intelligence sector. Their in-house developments will probably be integrated with the expertise gained from acquired startups, continuing a past trend.
Concurrently, Lip-Bu Tan identified artificial intelligence as the primary challenge facing the memory market, which is currently experiencing unprecedented price surges and microchip shortages. In the Intel CEO’s estimation, any significant improvement in this situation should not be anticipated before 2028.
