The Solar Astronomy Laboratory at the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences has announced the commencement of planet-scale geomagnetic storms impacting Earth.
“The onset of planet-wide magnetic storms is being registered. Presently, the intensity is at level G1 (minor storms), yet an escalation up to G2—G3 levels may occur within the next 24 hours,” a statement from the laboratory’s Telegram channel indicated.
It is emphasized that these geomagnetic disturbances represent a general response to elevated solar activity that has been recorded since the beginning of the month. The trigger for this event was the arrival of a plasma cloud ejected into space on February 2nd, originating from “the largest X8.1 class flare recorded in the last 1.5 years.”
It’s further specified that spectacular aurora displays are already visible across Canada and the United States.
