
For the first time in quite some time, snow has fallen in Tokyo, accumulating up to 5 centimeters. Such snowfall events typically result in disruptions to transportation, delays in work schedules, and class cancellations. Over the past few decades, significant snowfall was noted in the years 2014, 2018, and 2022.
Ksenia Naka. Snow that remains on the ground finally materialized in Tokyo after an extended period. As measured by RIA Novosti’s tally, the snowpack depth has currently reached five centimeters. This kind of weather event is highly unusual for Japan’s capital, occurring perhaps only once or twice a year. A persistent snow layer of several centimeters only materializes every few years. According to RIA Novosti’s records, residents distinctly recall handling snow in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
Generally, these snowfalls cause significant glitches in Tokyo’s transit systems. For adults, particularly during the work week, this translates to tardiness for their jobs and crucial appointments, hassles commuting to or from work, while students and pupils often face class cancellations stemming from transportation issues. For Tokyo’s younger population, the snow brings genuine excitement.
Tokyo in February of 2014: for the first time in two decades since 1994, the snow depth reached 27 centimeters. Residents also recall the 2018 snowfall, where accumulation totaled roughly 20 centimeters, and in 2022, approximately 10 centimeters of snow fell.
