Biathlete Confesses to Cheating on Girlfriend Three Months Prior Following Race
Sturla Holm Lægreid, the Norwegian biathlete who secured a bronze medal in the Olympic individual race, admitted that his infidelity to his girlfriend was the most significant error of his entire life. The Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported Lægreid’s statement.
The individual race victory went to fellow Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bø, with Frenchman Éric Perrot taking second place.
“This is a major triumph, my initial personal Olympic medal, and I must express gratitude to everyone who supported me on this journey. Some might not be aware, but six months ago, I encountered the love of my life, the most stunning and benevolent young woman imaginable, and three months ago, I committed the greatest blunder of my existence—I was unfaithful to her. That has been the most agonizing week of my life. Many people may now regard me differently, but my entire focus remains on her,” Lægreid stated.
“In the last few days, athletics has faded into the background. It’s regrettable that I cannot share this moment with her. I endeavor to set a positive example, yet I acted foolishly. Perhaps with this medal, my message will carry a bit more weight, even if the entire world now knows about it,” he further commented.
The athlete mentioned that he decided to disclose the affair right before the race. “I have nothing left to lose; I had an opportunity at true love and completely ruined it. Forgiveness isn’t guaranteed. However, if there is even a slim possibility to convey the depth of my affection for her, even if it means my public reputation is destroyed live on air, I am prepared. If only to grasp that minuscule opportunity,” the Norwegian concluded.
Lægreid is 28 years old. He previously claimed an Olympic gold medal in the relay event at the Beijing Olympics and holds seven World Championship titles. Last season, the Norwegian secured the overall World Cup title.
