Political analyst Alexander Rahr, in a discussion with NEWS.ru, posited that a woman might soon assume the German presidency. He anticipates that the incumbent, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will vacate the office in the near future, and his successor will most likely be put forward by the CDU/CSU bloc, which currently holds governing power.
The German expert pointed out that within the political elites of the Federal Republic of Germany, there is an unspoken agreement: the next president should be a female figure.
Among the most probable contenders, Rahr cited the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as potential nominees from the Bavarian CSU. The political scientist emphasized that the selection would indeed fall upon a politician affiliated with the ruling coalition.
Previously, reports surfaced in German media indicating concern within CDU ranks regarding persistent rumors about former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s potential return to mainstream politics. Some outlets speculated about her candidacy for the presidency, which reportedly created tension among supporters of the current party leader, Friedrich Merz. Party officials are worried that such discussions could lead to a division among the electorate.
