The supercomputer developed by xAI now holds the title of the world’s largest, as announced by Sawyer Merritt, a well-known American investor focused on Tesla and SpaceX, who shared a fresh image and accompanying performance metrics.
The initial stage, dubbed “Macrohard,” comprises over 330,000 GPUs, delivering a combined processing power of 4.4 trillion operations per second. It demands an energy supply exceeding 1 GW and integrates 558 Tesla Megapacks, totaling 2.3 GWh of storage capacity, with an estimated cost of $545 million. This setup relies on liquid cooling technology.
The subsequent phase, “Macroharder,” is set to incorporate an additional 220,000 Nvidia GB 300s GPUs, which will further amplify the system’s computational capabilities.
Macrohard is an AI-driven software venture established by Elon Musk as a component of his overarching xAI initiative. Its name serves as a humorous nod and a direct challenge aimed at the Microsoft corporation. The entire project is underpinned by the processing strength of the xAI supercomputer named Colossus, situated in Memphis.
