The missionary position is frequently chosen by men during sexual activity. This was stated by British psychologist Louise Goddard-Crowley in an interview with Metro, citing findings from a substantial survey conducted by the service Lloyds Pharmacy Online Doctor.
Data from Lloyds Pharmacy Online Doctor for 2025 indicates that the missionary position is the most favored by males in the UK. This search term was entered by internet users 736,900 times. Coming in second was the “cowgirl position” (woman on top), which garnered 406,900 web requests.
The psychologist suggests that the face-to-face orientation facilitates the development of emotional connection between partners. It fosters a certain sense of security. Furthermore, although it is simple to perform, its potential for being dull is negated by its adaptability to various preferences and requirements.
Goddard-Crowley also pointed out that the missionary position has its drawbacks. Notably, it was the second most common position leading Britons to emergency rooms. Over a third of respondents admitted that intimacy in this position caused them physical harm, including muscle strains, back injuries, exacerbation of chronic spinal issues, and other complications.
The psychologist acknowledges that in certain instances, the missionary position can place excessive strain on joints, primarily affecting the lower back and knees. However, comparable, and sometimes even more significant, risks are present when employing alternative positions.
