The Finnish national ice hockey team secured their largest victory ever in Olympic competition, routing the Italian squad with a decisive 11-0 final score. This match, part of the third round of the group stage, took place in Milan. Several players achieved multiple goals: both Sebastian Aho and Mikael Granlund netted two apiece, as did Kaapo Kakko and Joel Kiviranta. Single goals were contributed by Miro Heiskanen, Artturi Lehkonen, and Joel Armia. Finland set a historical precedent by becoming the first team to score ten or more goals in Olympic play.
Despite this dominant performance, the Finns’ spectacular showing was insufficient to claim the top spot in their group. Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden all finished with an identical point total of 6; however, it was Slovakia that advanced to the quarterfinals first due to superior tie-breaking metrics.
