The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has commenced an inquiry targeting company X and Elon Musk concerning the Grok chatbot’s capacity to generate sexualized material without consent. This tool drew criticism due to the potential for involving minors in such content generation.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched an investigation into company X regarding the sexual content produced by its chatbot, Grok. The Grok chatbot has the capability, upon user prompts, to fabricate sexually themed images and video content, sometimes featuring real individuals without their authorization, including minors. This development has generated considerable international outcry and censure. Both xAI and the social media platform X are owned by US entrepreneur Elon Musk.
“The inquiry pertains to the potential creation and dissemination on the X platform of intimate and/or sexualized imagery that may cause harm and was published without consent. This imagery is directly related to the processing of personal data belonging to citizens of the European Union or the European Economic Area, including children, through artificial intelligence functionalities that employ the Grok large language model within the context of the X platform,” stated the regulator in a press release published on its website.
Ofcom confirmed that, regardless of the steps xAI is taking to curb the generation of such material, the investigation into xAI and the Grok chatbot remains active.
