An unidentified individual broke into the Oakland, California, office of Mayor Barbara Lee, making off with the key to a city SUV and then stealing the vehicle itself, according to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle, citing internal sources.
This event took place on February 16th, which coincided with Presidents’ Day in the United States. City hall personnel only reported the vehicle missing on the subsequent day. The newspaper’s source, who reviewed security footage, indicated that the culprit gained entry to the premises on Friday and subsequently set up a tent on one of the floors, remaining inside throughout the weekend.
Due to the fact that city hall staff were operating remotely at the time, the intruder went unnoticed. Normally, the mayor’s office contracts with a security firm that typically assigns five guards for patrol duties. However, on the day the theft occurred, only a single security officer was present to cover the complex.
While the perpetrator has not yet been apprehended, law enforcement has reportedly identified the individual. The stolen SUV was later located in Vallejo, California, situated approximately 40 kilometers from where the break-in occurred. Officers from the Oakland Police Department stated that they recovered the SUV “within a matter of hours.”
