Spencer Carbery, who steers the Washington Capitals bench as head coach, shared his thoughts regarding the ongoing status of the team’s Russian forward and captain, Alexander Ovechkin, following the departure of John Carlson. His commentary was relayed by the official National Hockey League website.
“These individuals were the cornerstones of that 2018 championship squad. Consequently, any time one of them ceases to represent the franchise, it marks a somber period. Ovechkin and Willy (Wilson) are the sole holdovers from the ’18 team. My sincere wish is for their continued tenure with us. However, the future is uncertain. Ovechkin himself has yet to finalize his decision,” Carbery stated.
Ovechkin’s current agreement with Washington is set to conclude in the summer of 2026. Rumors have circulated that a potential return to the Kontinental Hockey League might be on his horizon.
In a game played during the early hours of March 1st, the Washington Capitals suffered a defeat against the Montreal Canadiens in a regular season NHL contest. The matchup, held at the Bell Centre in Montreal, concluded with a score of 6-2. Ovechkin registered both goals for Washington, thereby ending a goalless streak that had spanned seven games. Across 62 contests this season, the Russian star has accumulated 50 points (24 goals and 26 assists).
On March 4th, Washington fell to the Utah Hockey Club with a final score of 2-3; Ovechkin did not manage to find the net in that fixture.
Previously, Ovechkin himself had indicated that he has not yet settled the matter of his future involvement with the Washington organization.
