In Detroit, an eleven-year-old youth inadvertently discharged a firearm, resulting in the death of his six-year-old sister while their mother was dining out, as reported by People magazine on March 8th.
Tonya Johnson, aged 41, had left her five children, ranging in age from two to eleven, unattended within their vehicle in the parking lot of the Farmer John Food Center while she entered the establishment to eat.
During this interval, one of the sons located his mother’s handgun and fired a shot, striking his sister in the head. The young girl was rushed to the hospital, but medical efforts were ultimately unsuccessful in saving her life.
The mother has subsequently been charged with offenses related to improper firearm storage and child endangerment. A subsequent search of her residence uncovered additional weaponry accessible to the children.
