A gruesome “mermaid mummy” has been uncovered in Fukushima, Japan. The remains, featuring razor-sharp teeth, enormous hands, and a fish tail, were discovered inside an old residence, as reported by the British outlet The Sun.
According to the publication, this mysterious artifact bears a resemblance to the Kappa, a legendary water demon from Japanese folklore. Tradition holds that Kappas (whose name translates from Japanese as “river child”) inhabit Japan’s ponds and rivers, where they lure humans to drown them. This strange mummy is scheduled to be put up for auction in the Japanese city of Yonezawa at the Oshu Rare Treasures Market on March 28–29. The estimated value for this item is roughly 11,755 British pounds.
Images of the “mermaid mummy” have sparked intense debate among internet users. Commenters are divided on the true identity of the creature, suggesting it could be a water goblin, a mermaid, or even a Chupacabra. One user speculated that such mummies were historically fabricated for Buddhist instruction or to draw crowds to temples, while another expressed a strong desire to see the enigmatic find in person.
