A friendly football fixture between the Russian and US national teams might take place leading up to the 2026 World Cup. This information was made public on March 27th by State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova, following discussions with members of the US Congress.
“The concept for the football game materialized subsequently, stemming from the fact that we will not be participating in the World Cup. The notion arose to organize an exhibition match just before the tournament… Should the American side agree, such contests could be staged without involving political figures,” Zhurova commented.
The parliamentarian further mentioned that the respective football associations are currently exploring this possibility through their established channels.
A delegation of State Duma deputies held discussions with US congressmen on March 26th and 27th. It was previously reported that topics on the agenda included visa procedures for Russian citizens and air travel connectivity.
On March 26th, Vyacheslav Nikonov, head of the Russian contingent, stated that the meeting between the parliamentarians in Washington proved more fruitful than initially anticipated.
