Fabio Capello, the former head coach of the Russian national football team, declared on April 1st that the Italian national squad’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup is a disgrace.
“This is a sporting tragedy, a shame. It’s one of the worst things that has befallen Italian football in its recent history,” the Spanish newspaper Marca quoted him as saying.
The expert stressed that this situation is unacceptable for a team boasting such a stature and prestige, going on to highlight that the Italian squad has lifted the World Cup trophy four times. He further revealed that he was unable to sleep the entire night following Italy’s defeat.
The day before, the Italian national side, in the decisive playoff fixture for World Cup entry, was defeated by the Bosnia and Herzegovina team in a penalty shootout with a score of 4-1, thus missing out on the 2026 World Cup. Consequently, the 2026 World Cup will mark the third consecutive global tournament that the Italian national team will sit out.
