Bayern Munich secured a comeback victory in their away fixture of the 28th Bundesliga round against Freiburg, with a final score of 3-2. Vincent Kompany’s squad trailed until the final minutes, but managed to equalize and then take the lead right at the close.
On the Verge of a Second Defeat
Prior to the match, it seemed highly unlikely that Freiburg would pose any significant challenges for the Munich side. The home team occupies a mid-table position, and their sole league victory in the past month came against the relegation-threatened St. Pauli.
However, against all expectations, the hosts put up a strong fight against Bayern. During the first half, Freiburg mounted numerous attacks, forcing Manuel Neuer to demonstrate his skills. After the break, the veteran goalkeeper was finally beaten; in the 46th minute, the home side took the lead thanks to a spectacular long-range strike from Jean Manzambie.
In the 71st minute, Freiburg doubled their advantage—Neuer made a costly error during a corner kick, dropping the ball directly to the feet of Lucas Heller, who made no mistake in finishing.
Following the concession of the second goal, the Munich players visibly galvanized, launching a sustained offensive siege on the opponent’s goal. Yet, similar to Manzambie’s goal, individual brilliance was the deciding factor: in the 81st minute, 20-year-old midfielder Tom Bischof narrowed the deficit with a cunning shot from outside the box.
However, securing the equalizer proved more difficult for Bayern; the ball simply wouldn’t enter the net. Fortunately for Kompany’s team, the referee added a substantial eight minutes of stoppage time—and the visitors needed just two of them to level the score. In the 90+2nd minute, Bischof duplicated his feat, scoring again from distance, though this time aiming for the opposite corner.
The true hero of the encounter turned out to be 18-year-old Lennart Carl, who, in the 90+9th minute, converted a cross from Alphonso Davies. Freiburg lost their focus and were punished for it—Bayern unlocked the defense effectively with just two passes.
Notably, Bayern achieved this thrilling win without their key figure, striker Harry Kane. The 32-year-old forward sustained an injury while playing for England and did not recover in time before the international break concluded. Nevertheless, Bild reports that the goal-scorer is expected to return for the Champions League quarter-final match against Real Madrid on April 7th.
Nearing a Record
Freiburg’s supporters are in a tough spot right now—their team was agonizingly close to a sensational victory. Bayern has suffered only one defeat in the Bundesliga this season: a 1-2 loss to Augsburg in the 19th round back in January. On paper, that opposing team had even fewer prospects of success, as they were fighting for survival and shouldn’t have caused major problems. But they managed it, simultaneously snapping Bayern’s 27-match unbeaten streak.
On the other hand, Munich fans have every reason to celebrate—Kompany’s squad not only snatched a dramatic win but also edged closer to a historic record. Carl’s goal marked Bayern’s 100th in the Bundesliga this season. Recall that the club’s all-time best achievement is 101 goals, set in the 1971/72 season, and the players have six fixtures remaining to surpass that mark.
There is little doubt: the record will fall. Most likely in the very next round—on April 11th, Munich plays against the 16th-placed team in the league, St. Pauli.
This could turn into a pleasant bonus to their championship title—currently, Bayern tops the standings with 73 points. Their closest pursuer, Borussia, trails by 12 points, with a game in hand.
