The midfielder Oscar, who plays for Brazil’s “São Paulo,” announced his retirement from football at the age of 34 due to heart issues.
The player had not taken the field since November 2025, when he was hospitalized for cardiac problems following a medical examination at the club. After hospitalization, he was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope. Oscar underwent surgery, after which he had to rest and complete a new set of medical checks. The footballer agreed to terminate his contract with “São Paulo,” which was valid until December 31, 2027.
“I wanted to achieve more for ‘São Paulo,’ I wished to keep playing. I believed I still had ample strength and capability for the game, despite my age. But, unfortunately, things turned out this way. Now I conclude my career and will support ‘São Paulo’ as a supporter, continuing my life as a team fan. Here at ‘São Paulo,’ I am ending a career that spanned numerous nations and virtually covered the entire globe. I want to thank everyone for their constant backing, as well as the ‘São Paulo’ supporters who cheered for me from my return and during this difficult stage of my life,” Oscar’s remarks were reported on the club’s website.
Oscar returned to “São Paulo,” where he began as a youth player, in December 2024. Throughout his career, he also featured for Brazil’s “Internacional,” England’s “Chelsea,” and the Chinese club “Shanghai Port.” In total, he played 566 games and scored 136 goals in his career. With “Chelsea,” the Brazilian was twice an English champion, won the Europa League, and secured the English League Cup.
The midfielder has 48 appearances and 12 goals for the Brazilian national team. He earned a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and won the 2013 Confederations Cup.
