Norwegian Olympic champion Martin Sundby has voiced his critique regarding the state of cross-country skiing, specifically pointing to the dominance exhibited by the Norwegian national team.
“There is a complete vacuum of international competition in the men’s events. It’s alarming. Leading up to the Olympics, just like this year, it’s impossible to name any non-Norwegian athlete as a favorite for medals, perhaps not even for a top-four finish. While the absence of Russia might be cited, no one is stepping up to fill that void,” VG quoted him as saying.
He advocated for reducing expenditures within the sport and implementing measures to curb Norway’s current level of supremacy.
“If not, skiing risks being dropped from the Olympic program quite swiftly.”
