The Washington Capitals hockey club (HC) has put forward their captain, Alexander Ovechkin, as a nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This news was shared by journalist Sammy Siber on her profile on the social network X (formerly Twitter) on April 8th.
“The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. Ovechkin has been named the Capitals’ nominee,” the post stated.
The award is presented by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA), which comprises media representatives across North America. Each National Hockey League (NHL) franchise independently selects its representative.
Throughout the history of this award, Russian hockey players have never won it. Ovechkin’s nomination presents the Washington captain with an opportunity to make history as the first Russian to secure this esteemed trophy. The journalists’ voting will take place after the conclusion of the NHL regular season.
On April 7th, the Washington Capitals HC released a video celebrating their captain, Russian player Alexander Ovechkin, for his record in career regular-season goals in the NHL. On April 6th, 2025, in a game against the New York Islanders, Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in National Hockey League regular season play, thereby surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals.
